X-rays are necessary to detect problem areas in the mouth so we can provide proper treatment.

Digital radiography allows our dentists to take x-rays without exposing patients to large amounts of radiation like traditional x-rays. That’s right. Digital x-rays expose patients to 80% less radiation compared to traditional film x-rays.
At Sales Family Dental, we use digital x-rays for the interior of dental structures and tissues– the teeth, bones, and gums. X-rays show us in-depth information than would otherwise be seen with the naked eye. We can detect problems and potential problems with digital x-rays.

How do digital x-rays work?

We use a reusable phosphorescent plate in an x-ray cassette. This allows the production of a digital image to be scanned by a laser and then stored on a computer. The soft areas of the mouth (gums and cheeks) look darker on the digital images. The strong enamel on the teeth appear very light on the digital images, and the areas of decay appear darker. We are trained to take and read the digital images at Sales Family Dental.

Why do patients need digital radiography?

X-rays are necessary to detect problem areas in the mouth so we can provide proper treatment. We cannot see all dental problems with the naked eye; instead, x-rays allow us to do so. When we compare digital x-rays over time, we can determine any changes or developments in your oral health.

How often do patients need digital x-rays taken?

Our dentists will determine how often you need digital x-rays. It will depend on your age and your dental history. As an example, an adult who has no history of dental problems might go 1 year between digital x-rays, but a child or adult who is prone to decay may need them taken every 6 months.
